Gantt chart definition
A Gantt chart is a bar chart that illustrates a project schedule. It maps activities against a horizontal time axis so you can see, in one view, the start, finish and duration of every task. Because the bars share a calendar, it also reveals which tasks run in parallel, which must happen in sequence, and how the project fits together from kickoff to finish.
In project management terms it is a scheduling tool, and it answers four questions at once: what has to be done, when each thing happens, in what order, and how it is going. That combination is why the format has survived more than a century and is still the default view in nearly every planning tool.
What does a Gantt chart look like?
Picture a spreadsheet grid. The left-hand columns hold task names and details; to the right, the columns become a calendar. For each task a coloured bar stretches across the cells matching its dates, so a three-week task is a bar three weeks wide. Read top to bottom for the work, left to right for time.
Parts of a Gantt chart
Almost every Gantt chart is built from the same six elements:
- Task list — the rows naming each activity, often grouped into phases or a work breakdown structure (WBS).
- Timeline (date axis) — the calendar across the top that sets the horizontal scale, in days, weeks or months.
- Task bars — position shows when; length shows how long.
- Milestones — zero-duration moments such as a sign-off or launch, drawn as a diamond. Having no length, a milestone can be moved but never resized.
- Dependencies — arrows showing that one task must finish before another can begin.
- Progress — shading showing percent complete, so planned and actual sit side by side.
Many charts add a vertical "today" line, a highlighted critical path and owner labels, but those six are the essentials.
What is a Gantt chart used for?
Gantt charts are used anywhere work has to happen in a coordinated order against a deadline. They plan a schedule, show who owns what and when, make dependencies obvious, track progress so slippage shows early, give sponsors a one-page picture, and expose the moment one person is booked on two tasks at once — in construction, software, marketing, events, manufacturing, consulting and research alike.
A worked example: the Fernbank Café refit
Definitions only go so far. Here is one small project modelled end to end — a café closing for a refit and reopening — which everything later on this page refers back to. Five working days a week, starting Monday 2 March 2026.

Eight tasks, two milestones, and the whole thing lands on Wednesday 22 April. Nobody chose that date — it falls out of the durations and the links between them, which is the point of drawing a chart rather than typing dates into a document.
Notice what the table tells you that a task list could not. Rows 1 and 2 both start on day one because neither waits for the other. Row 3 is twenty days of waiting on a supplier, running quietly while the builders work. And rows 3 and 6 finish on the same Wednesday — the moment two independent chains must meet before the equipment can go in.
Reading the chart: float and the critical path
Once tasks are linked, the chart answers a question a task list cannot: which delays actually matter? Follow the longest chain — permits, strip-out, plumbing, flooring, install, inspection, training, reopening. That is the critical path, and every task on it has zero slack, so one lost day anywhere along it moves the reopening to 23 April.
The equipment order is the interesting case: twenty days of pure lead time finishing the same day as the flooring, and therefore also at zero float. Two chains can each single-handedly push the opening — one of building work, one of a purchase order. Better learned before placing the order than after.

Only one row has any give in it. If the designer needs three extra days, the first two are free and the third costs you the opening.
Two details about how gantts.app computes this. The figure it reports is total float — how far a task can slip before the project end date moves — not free float, which measures slack against the immediate successor alone. And its scheduling is as-placed: a dependency can only push a task later than where you put it, never drag it earlier. Park "Staff training" in June and linking it to the inspection will not pull it back to April; the chart shows the gap you left rather than silently closing it.
Gantt chart examples by project type
The café refit is one shape; the format holds while the tasks change with the domain. Software runs discovery, design, sprints, QA and release. Construction chains site prep, foundation and inspection so tightly that almost everything is critical. Marketing runs tracks in parallel across teams. Advantages and disadvantages
Gantt charts are popular for good reasons, but they are not the right tool for every situation.
In their favour: the whole schedule fits on one visual; a delay's ripple is visible rather than guessed at; parallel bars expose over-commitment; non-experts read one without training; and it pairs naturally with critical path analysis.
Against: hundreds of tasks make an unreadable chart; an un-maintained one is worse than none, because people keep trusting a picture that stopped being true; and bar length is duration, not effort — the café's 20-day equipment order costs almost no labour. Teams doing continuous, unpredictable work are usually better served by a Kanban board. The fix for most of this is a tool that recalculates when a date or dependency changes, rather than a picture you redraw by hand.
Who invented the Gantt chart?
The chart is named after Henry L. Gantt (1861–1919), an American mechanical engineer and management consultant who developed and popularized this style of scheduling chart around 1910 to 1915, first for factory production and then, famously, for wartime shipbuilding. He was not strictly first: in the 1890s the Polish engineer Karol Adamiecki designed a very similar chart he called a harmonogram, but he published mostly in Polish and Russian and never reached a wide audience. Gantt's version spread through American and European industry, so the format took his name.
