Road Construction Schedule Template

A free road construction schedule template laid out along a real highway programme — survey and design, land acquisition and consents, utility diversions, earthworks and drainage, capping, sub-base and the bound pavement layers, signage and road markings, staged traffic management, and handover to the maintaining authority.

What's included

On a road scheme the pavement is the easy part. What controls the date is what has to move before you can dig: statutory undertakers' apparatus, land you do not yet own, and the traffic that has to keep flowing. The template gives each of those its own track:

Utility diversions are the programme. Statutory undertakers work to their own timescales, need long notice periods, and will not compress for your date — and every one of them must finish before you can excavate through that section. Get the C3 estimates requested during design, not after contract award, and put each undertaker on the chart as a separate bar with its own duration.

How to customize it

  1. Enter the confirmed road space booking dates first; on a live highway they are the fixed points the rest of the programme fits around.
  2. Add a row per statutory undertaker — gas, water, electricity and each telecoms operator have different notice periods and different crews.
  3. Split the scheme into sections or chainage ranges once the TM staging is known, so earthworks and pavement can be tracked per stage.
  4. Move surfacing out of the winter months where you can; binder and surface course laying has temperature limits that stop work on the day.
  5. Insert environmental exclusion periods — nesting season, bat activity, fisheries windows — as blocked bars if your consents impose them.
  6. Keep both road safety audits on the chart; the post-construction audit is a gate to opening, not a review afterwards.

Scheduling tips

Frequently asked questions

How long does a road construction project take?

A short urban improvement may run 6–9 months; a new link road or major widening runs two years or more. The template uses a roughly eighteen-month programme you can compress or extend from the opening date.

What usually delays road schemes?

Utility diversions and consents far more often than construction. Both depend on third parties with their own timescales, which is why each gets a separate track rather than a line inside the works.

How do I show traffic management on a Gantt chart?

As staged bars with the design and road space booking as predecessors, and each construction stage depending on its own TM stage. That way a refused or delayed booking visibly threatens the works it protects.

Does this cover a bridge or structure within the scheme?

Only at summary level. If your scheme includes a structure, run our bridge construction schedule alongside it and link the possession windows.

Can I use it for resurfacing rather than new construction?

Yes. Drop the land, consents and earthworks phases and keep traffic management, pavement layers and markings — that is the shape of a resurfacing programme.

Is the road construction template free?

Yes. Free Excel, PowerPoint and CSV downloads, and free online editing with no sign-up or watermark.
