What's included

An S-curve is just cumulative progress plotted over time. It is S-shaped because projects ramp slowly, run hot in the middle and taper through commissioning. The template gives you a schedule with that shape built in:

Who uses this template

Project controllers, PMO analysts, and earned-value practitioners use this to compare planned against actual progress. Set a baseline and the built-in panel reads out PV, EV, schedule variance, and SPI, giving managers an at-a-glance signal of whether a project is ahead or behind before the slippage becomes expensive.

A single curve tells you nothing. The value is in the gap between the planned curve and the actual one: if actual sits below planned, you are behind, and the vertical distance is your schedule variance in value terms while the horizontal distance is roughly your delay in time. How to customize it

  1. Set a baseline as soon as the plan is agreed, without one there is no planned curve, and the S-curve panel has nothing to compare against.
  2. Keep percent-complete honest and current; the actual curve is only as good as the last update.
  3. Weight the middle phases heavily. If your durations are evenly spread the curve comes out as a straight line, which usually means the plan is not detailed enough.
  4. Add cost or man-hour values per task if you want a cost-loaded curve rather than a duration-weighted one.
  5. Re-baseline only on a formal change. Re-baselining to hide variance is how a project loses the only warning system it had.

What is an S-curve in project management?

What are PV, EV, SV and SPI?

Planned value is the work you said you would have done by now, earned value is what you actually have done, schedule variance is EV minus PV, and SPI is EV divided by PV. Above 1.0 is ahead of plan, below 1.0 is behind.

Why does my curve look like a straight line?

Usually because every task has a similar duration and weight, so progress accrues evenly. Break the middle phases into more detailed tasks, or load the tasks with cost or man-hours, and the S-shape appears.

Do I need a baseline to use this?

Yes for planned versus actual. Without a baseline you can still see cumulative actual progress, but there is nothing to compare it against and no SPI.
