What's included
Moving is stressful because everything lands at once, and the admin (utilities, mail, address changes) quietly has the longest lead time. This template spreads the whole move across one timeline, in the six stages a house move actually runs through:
- Plan & budget, Set your moving date and budget, make an inventory, start decluttering, and get quotes from removal companies. Milestone: plan & budget set.
- Book & notify, Book your movers or a van, arrange time off and help, give notice to your landlord or list the property, and sort parking and lift access. Milestone: movers booked.
- Change of address & admin, Set up mail redirection, switch your utilities and broadband, update your address everywhere (bank, insurance, licence), and register with local services. Milestone: address changes done.
- Pack, Gather supplies, pack room by room labelling as you go, and set aside an essentials box for the first night. Milestone: packing complete.
- Moving week, Confirm with the movers, defrost the fridge, take meter readings, clean the old home, and get through moving day. Milestone: moved in.
- Settle in, Unpack the essentials, get the utilities and broadband working, unpack room by room, and register on the electoral roll. Milestone: settled in.
Who uses this template
Anyone moving home, renters, first-time buyers, families and downsizers, uses this timeline to run a house move without the admin, packing and moving-day logistics colliding at the last minute. It covers a personal move from setting the date and budget through booking movers, changing your address and packing to moving day and settling in, distinct from a corporate office relocation.
How to customize it
- Set your moving day first and work backwards; six to eight weeks is comfortable, but even a two-week move works if you compress the admin.
- Add a row per room under Pack so a whole-house move shows each room’s progress and nothing gets left in a cupboard.
- Book your removal company early, good movers get booked out weeks ahead, especially at month-end and in summer.
- Keep the essentials box (kettle, chargers, medications, bedding, toiletries) as its own task so it is packed last and unpacked first.
- Mark “movers booked”, “address changes done” and “packing complete” as milestones so you can see whether you are on track for moving day.
Scheduling tips
- Declutter before you pack, not after. Every box you do not move saves time and money; start selling and donating early, because it runs for weeks, it is the one task you cannot rush at the end.
- Utilities and mail have the longest lead time. Switching energy and broadband and redirecting post can take days or weeks to take effect, so start the address admin six weeks out, not on moving week.
- Label boxes by room and by priority. A box marked “kitchen, open first” saves hours at the other end; label as you pack, not from memory afterwards.
- Take meter readings and photos on the day. Readings and a photo of each room protect your deposit and settle any final utility bills, an easy task to forget in the rush.
- Pack an essentials box last. Kettle, chargers, medicines, a change of clothes and bedding, the first night is far easier when the one box you need is the one you can find.

Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I start planning a move?
Six to eight weeks is comfortable for a house move, enough time to book movers, declutter and get the address admin done before packing takes over. The template spreads planning, booking, admin, packing, moving week and settling in across a timeline so you can see whether your runway is realistic.
What should a moving checklist include?
A moving date and budget, removal quotes, notice to your landlord, mail redirection, utility and broadband switches, address updates, room-by-room packing, an essentials box, meter readings and an unpacking plan. The template gives each stage its own phase, with milestones you can track.
Can I show dependencies between moving tasks?
Yes. Open the template in the free gantts.app editor to link finish-to-start relationships (book movers → pack → moving day → settle in) so if one date slips, the later work shifts automatically and your critical path to moving day stays visible.
Is the moving house timeline template free?
Yes, free to download as Excel, PowerPoint or CSV, and free to edit online with no sign up.
