What's included
A one-page plan is an editing exercise, not a formatting one. The template is deliberately coarse so the whole project fits without becoming unreadable:
- Phase-level rows only, Around eight to twelve bars total. Detail belongs in the working schedule, not on the summary sheet.
- Quarter or month axis, A one-page view needs a coarse timeline; day-level granularity is what forces plans onto three sheets.
- Milestones as anchors, Key decision points and deliverables shown as diamonds, which is what readers scan for first.
- Swimlanes by workstream, Group bars by team or workstream so ownership is visible without a separate legend.
- Status at a glance, Percent complete on each bar so the sheet answers "where are we" without a second document.
- A3 or A4 landscape, Sized for both, A3 for the wall, A4 for the pack.
Who uses this template
Project managers, PMO leads, and consultants use this when a steering committee or executive sponsor wants the whole project on one sheet. It fits an entire plan onto a single A3 or A4 page, the plan-on-a-page format ideal for board packs, status walls, and quick alignment conversations where a scrolling tool would lose the room.
How to customize it
- Aim for eight to twelve bars; collapse anything more detailed into its parent phase.
- Set the timeline zoom to month or quarter before exporting.
- Use one colour per workstream so the swimlanes read without a key.
- Keep only milestones that a sponsor would care about, typically four to six.
- Export A3 for printing and A4 for the board pack.
Scheduling tips
- Write for the reader, not the doer. A plan on a page answers "are we on track and what is next", not "who does what this week".
- Roll up, do not delete. Keep the detailed schedule underneath; the one-pager is a view of it, not a replacement.
- Put the today marker on. A summary chart without a today line makes progress impossible to judge at a glance.
- Show slippage against baseline. If you have set a baseline, the ghost bars communicate drift faster than any status column.
- Refresh it on a fixed cadence. A one-pager that is three weeks stale does more harm than none at all.

Frequently asked questions
How do I fit a whole project on one page?
Reduce the number of rows to phase level, set the timeline to month or quarter, print landscape, and export to PDF. Reducing detail is what makes it fit, shrinking the font is not.
What is a plan on a page?
A single-sheet summary of a project schedule, usually phase-level bars with key milestones, used for steering committees and sponsor reporting. This template is that format.
What size should a one-page Gantt chart be?
A3 landscape works best for printing and wall display; A4 landscape fits a standard board pack. The template is laid out for both.
Is the one-page template free?
Yes, free to download, free to edit online, and PDF export carries no watermark.
