Who uses this template

Rail signalling engineers, project managers, and possession planners use this for resignalling and interlocking upgrades. It covers design, interlocking data preparation, factory acceptance testing, track possession planning, installation, site testing, and entry into service, aligning engineering work with the scarce night and weekend possessions when the line can be worked on.

The possession is the schedule. Engineering access is applied for against timetable deadlines a year or more ahead, and once the booking is made the question is no longer "when do we install" but "does the work fit in the hours we were given". Plan every possession backwards from handback time, with the testing at the end and a contingency plan for the point where you must stop and give the railway back regardless.

How to customize it

  1. Enter your real possession dates first and lock them; every other bar on this chart negotiates around them.
  2. Add a row per possession with its actual duration in hours rather than days, a 52-hour weekend and a 29-hour weekend are different projects.
  3. Move as much as possible out of the possession and into midweek or offline work; anything that can be pre-wired, pre-tested or pre-installed should be.
  4. Extend the data preparation and checking bars if your interlocking is large, independent checking is a slow, mandated process and cannot be run in parallel with itself.
  5. Insert a formal go/no-go a fortnight before each commissioning possession, with FAT, testing readiness and staff competence as its predecessors.
  6. Mark design acceptance, FAT pass, possessions confirmed, commissioning and entry into service as milestones.

How long does a resignalling scheme take?

A single-interlocking renewal commonly runs 18-36 months from feasibility to entry into service, with only a few weekends of that spent physically on the railway. The template uses a roughly two-year schedule you can extend by adding possessions.

What is an engineering possession?

A booked period during which a section of railway is closed to traffic so work can be done on it. Possessions are applied for against timetable planning deadlines many months ahead, which is why they behave as fixed constraints rather than schedulable tasks.

Why is interlocking data preparation on the critical path?

Because the data has to be prepared, independently checked and proven in simulation and factory testing before it can be installed, and each of those steps is sequential and mandated. It is slow office work that decides whether the commissioning weekend can happen.

Can this be used for a level crossing or a station scheme?

Yes. The possession-centred structure is the same, trim the interlocking data rows and keep design, possession planning, installation, testing and entry into service.
